Installing Bird Houses
We do not recommend "hanging" bird houses. We advise using a plumbers flange as shown below - it is simple to install and allows easy removal of the bird house for maintenance or replacement (if that tree branch does fall in the storm and hit the only thing in the yard you installed over 5 foot in the air!)
Simple instructions using a Plumbers flange
1. The heavy duty pipe is not inexpensive
2. You can save on pipe cost by purchasing two flanges and mounting the pipe on top of a post instead of using all metal post mounted in concrete
3. The longer the pipe, the more difficult for the neighbors cat and pet squirrel to shimmy up the pipe. The may make it to the top of the wood post - they are going to have a difficult climb up the pipe itself (especially if you did as I did for a couple of days and hooked it to the electric fence charger.......).
4. If you are going to post mount a small bird house - order a house with a cleanout on the back of the house and not on the bottom.
5. All of our houses come with a minimum of 3/4" wood base - use a screw that will utilize all of that but not extend into the house itself.
6. We can pre-install the flange for you and, if you are local, can assist you installing the post/pipe.
7. You can use a "plumbers T" on the pipe so you can mount to a wall or other vertical fixture
8. The flange costs around $7.00, the pipe about $2 a foot (depending on where you purchase it).
9. Print this out and take it with you to the hardware store and they will assist you with the purchase of the pieces you need.

Second option: Symons strong back tie for a 2x4
These can be found at most hardware stores. This is one for a 2.4 but you can get them for a 2x6.
Cost: around $1.50
Easily installed as you can see.
You can also mount one on the fence so the bottom part of the 2x4 is attached to the fence securely.
